Our Big Day - 25 Mar 2023
Meet the Couple

Matt McShane
The Husband
Our relationship developed very slowly.
it was a month after being introduced by my best friend Eric, before we started texting. When we finally started to connect, with a nudge... I knew I was talking to my future wife. I say "Good evening", she says "Good morning".
It may seem our relationship has appeared out of no where. However, over the last three years and 5 months, we have developed a deep relationship built on a godly love. We know each other so well we don't need words, just a look and a twitch to relay our messages.
We have certainly experienced all the emotions. Laughing being the most frequent, often so hard we cry. Just can't remember about what... one of the perks of being old as we are, is after six months we forget a lot and everything seem new again to us. If we get bored, just wait and all will be new again...
We have done so many things together over the screen, Bible study discussion, praying together, watching a movie though baking and teaching Jo Lene new recipes is at the top. The last one session we had being preparing & baking tea biscuits and cinnamon pinwheels. Oh my yes...sooo good!
I am most known for my patience, empathy, stability and calmness. Most important my desire to serve the Lord.

Jo Lene Ong
The Wife
It's true, I'm from a teensy island on the other side of the world, and if you're not from the area, there is a good chance you've never heard of it. I can hear it now "So how on earth did you connect with Matt?"
To be honest, I was really looking for someone like-minded to spend my life with... So after years of being in the grand chase, I resided to be single for the rest of my life. I settled in, had my own condo, a career and poured myself into doing the Lord's work, in every ministry I could. Wouldn't you know it, once I stopped looking, happy-ish with my life... POOF, there's Matt...
Well, I say poof, but believe me, there was nothing quick about this relationship. Not only was this in the making for years. When I finally reached out to Matt by email, I was so excited, a new adventure. A month later... no response at all. Most would have given up, but not me, did I mention I was determined? I decided to reach out to Eric (husband to my friend, Sara) and not too long after that, with a nudge from Eric to Matt...a move was made from email to texting, the connection was made...
More than married couples, that's right, we have talked more than any married couple I know, even my mother says, "I don't know what you guys can possibly be talking about", Matt's mother says "When she gets here you'll have nothing to talk about". Perhaps they're right, two to three hours a day every day for three years does add up. But no worries, we'll never get bored. Just have to wait six months and all the conversations are new again, the beauty of being old...lol
The challenge we face is the time difference so we talk in the morning and in the evening. When I wake up, he is going to bed. So we talk as two ships passing the night, I say "Good Morning", and he says "Good Night".
Wedding preparations continues & finally, the wedding bells...
Our daily video and Facetime calls soon moved into serious discussion about the wedding. We both consulted and spoke to the Oversight of Bethesda Depot Walk as we initially plan to be wedded in Singapore but we finally settled with Malaysia since most of Jo Lene's families are in Malaysia. We both are so excited to meet and we look forward to be join together before God and men...finally, we will become one after 3 years 5 months of LDR - we both are so thankful to the Lord for keeping us all these years and working on our patience and faith
The Meet-Up Plan & Wedding Preparation
We soon engaged a legal counsel for advice and was advised that since Jo Lene still cannot enter Canada, it would be best we both get married outside of Canada. Thus, we started talking about meeting up in other countries and possibly get wedded in other country. Of course, Jo Lene desires her parents to also attend the wedding and after much prayer & lengthy discussion, we decided Matt can come over to Malaysia or Singapore and we can meet there...
Talk about Marriage
Jo Lene's tourist visa still processing, even after 2 years in waiting. We were not sure how when we can meet and some suggested we should get married and Jo Lene can apply for a spouse visa. Of course, the idea of marriage is a commitment on both parties and yes, time and time again, we did talk about marriage already & preparing ourselves for it. After much prayer, Matt said "Let's get married" and did Jo Lene consider that as a proposal since we talked about it virtually? Oh well...Jo Lene do like the idea and agreed! The next big question is how we are going to make this happen....
Test of our patience & faith soon set-in on this long distance romance...
We still couldn't meet due to the pending tourist visa application and international borders lock down in Canada & Malaysia...thanks to the power of technology. we continued our Facetime video and calls and we even managed to watch a movie together (had our laughs!), bake together, celebrate our birthdays together but we ended up eating the cake meant for one another. These are all aside our prayer and Bible study times together.
Long Distance Relationship continued...
Much time was invested everyday to strengthen this relationship - we talk more than any married couples. One thing that makes us laugh each time is we totally forget about the time zone difference - he says "Good morning" to me and I replied the same only to realised it should be "Good evening" for him
Relationship blossomed...
Our video calls continued every day morning & night -the more we talked, the more we developed the interests for each other. One thing that brought us together closer is the virtual Bible study & discussion we had...Matt discovered we both love reading from the KJV version of the Bible and our interest in God's Word kinda of make us attracted to each other...no later than that, we knew we are in a relationship
Friendship started & borders lockdown
We continue our video calls every day morning & night - there's so much to talk about & getting to know each other better. Jo Lene wanted to visit again and renewed her tourist visa. Then the pandemic started...
First introduced & common interests...
Jo Lene made a solo trip trip to Canada, was introduced to Matt by Eric & Sara. Matt & Jo Lene connected using email, then text message before moving into audio & video call. Discovered we have so much & many things in common.
